Momma's Essentials

Momma's Essentials

Most of you can probably guess that I try to be as "natural", "organic", and "clean" as possible in every aspect of my life, but no where has this been more important to me than in my role as Momma. I have been using Young Living Essential Oils now for over 3 years. It all started when I was pregnant with Luke and I had a bad head cold. A friend introduced me diffusing Eucaylptus Radiata and I was infantry hooked! Something pure and natural that actually worked?!

Ever since them I've used YLEOs for everything from bug bites, to headaches, to cleaning the bathroom, to treating teething pain for my son. The list can truly go on and on.

So, finally I've decided to become an independent distributor for Young Living. I am going to share my experiences and thought and uses of YLEOs here and over on my facebook page - Momma's Essentials. So head on over and Like and Share my page please and thank you :)

Well, since the last time I posted on here I have had my second baby, little Lochlan. He has been such a light in our family's life. I wanted to take a minute to write about how I used EO's during labour and delivery.

Lochlan was born at home, so I had my full arsenal of oils at my disposal. I used Valor in the early stages of labour when that anxiousness of bringing a new life into my world- and my 2.5 year old's world - came into effect. A little rubbed on the back of my neck eased that slight tension.

Next, I used lavender to relax myself a bit after about 7 hours of gradually intensifying contractions. I used my moisturizer (coconut oil, vitamin e oil and lavender EO) after I had a long shower.

In my previous pregnancy I got sick during labour. So, thinking that my two labours would be the same, I had peppermint EO on hand, and ready to go, butthis time I didn't need it at all.

I had the diffuser going with Gentle Baby in it throughout labour and birth. I love love love this oil and diffusing it made me feel relaxed, confident, and just at ease about the whole notion of having another baby, and having him at home.

Lochlan was born in the birthing pool, and I laboured in there for about 45 minutes before he was born. My water broke in the water, and (TMI) some poop came out as my body started to push. But thanks to Melaleuca Alt. I didn't worry about exposing my newborn to the bacteria of fecal matter.

After he was born I kept the diffuser going for a few hours. That Gentle Baby smell is still so calming to both me and my now 4.5 month old. Whenever he gets a little fussy and I can't figure out what is wrong I just open the bottle of GB and wave it infront of his nose and he settles easily. It's like magic.

I did tear a little so once again YLEOs helped me with the healing process. They make a spray called Lavaderm, and I have to say it was so soothing and refreshing. I used it after I used the bathroom for the first week and a half after Lochlan was born.  I highly recommend it to all moms-to-be.

Anyway, that'd just a quick run down of the oils that helped me get through having a baby :)   If you'd like more info about how I use Essential Oils and other Young Living products, or about how to get your hands on some of these things, please don't hesitate to contact me. Gentle Baby --- the name of my latest favourite YLEO! I invested in this oil as a fun "splurge" and "perk" of pregnancy, but my goodness have I fallen in love with it over the last month. I'm halfway through my 15mL bottle already, so I'm definitely going to be buying a second one next month. Why do I love it?

Every pregnant momma can relate to the tight, itchy. uncomfortableness of the belly that defines your third trimester. Well, add to that the heat, and a bad reaction to chlorinated pool water, and the itchiness and uncomfortableness just gets worse! I had a horrible dry, itchy rash all over the sides of my belly, and even though I was using my go-to, heal-everything, moisturizer of lavender and coconut oil, and getting temporary relief, within an hour I'd have to reapply or the dreaded itchiness would return. So, I started to combine coconut oil and  Gentle Baby instead... this worked much better, not to mention I prefer the smell of GB more than lavender, but I still had about 2-3 inches on each of my sides (think oblique muscles), that were still giving me a hard time. So I brought out the big guns and used GB straight. It was instant relief that lasted for hours. I am so thankful to have had this blend on hand when I needed it most. It was so soothing, and cooling, and healing.

Although I haven't tried it yet, I have heard it's wonderful for perineal massage as well. Since I had such a traumatic tear when Luke was born, I'm definitely going to "prep" myself for the upcoming entrance of baby #2, and give GB a whirl.

Gentle Baby--it is now on my must-have list for pregnant mommas :)

Ever wonder what a day in the life of me is like? How do I use YLEOs on a regular basis? Well, today's post will answer those questions for you. I'm going to give you a run-down on how I used YLEOs today, so sit back, relax and be prepared to be amazed.... or at least a little interested haha.

7:00 a.m. - Head downstairs to make some breakfast for the family. I pour myself a glass of water and add 3 drops of Lemon EO to help clear the cobwebs and kickstart my digestive system.

7:10 a.m. - make our family's daily smoothie and again add a couple of drops of lemon for a little kick.

7:15 a.m. - take out the peppermint, lemon and lavender for my hubby to take for his allergies.... this is the first year he's never had to invest in some over-priced, chemical filled, pharmaceutical allergy med.

7:45 a.m. - hubby has a kink in his neck so I give him a little neck rub with some coconut oil and some PanAway.

8:10 a.m. - my rambunctious toddler runs around the corner a little too fast and biffs his knee against the wall... again, out comes the PanAway to "make it awww betta".

9:00 a.m. - get myself ready for the day. I use my daily moisturizer of coconut oil and lavender on my face, and give my growing baby bump a little attention and love with a good rub of Gentle Baby (oh how I love this blend!!!). I have noticed a few new spider veins popping up since my legs are now carrying an extra 17ish pounds of baby, so I put Lemongrass directly on the veins to help the circulation.

10:30 a.m. - time for my Red Raspberry Leaf Tea... I add a couple of drops of Citrus Fresh blend to make it extra tasty.

12:40 p.m. - naptime for my little dude.... an extra drop of peace & calming blend on the bottoms of his feet to help him settle down

3:00 p.m. - some outside time now that there's a break in the crazy rain that we've had all day. The sun is out so I put some of my homemade sunscreen on my very pale kiddo who refuses to put on any clothes but underwear these days. Carrot Seed oil and lavender oil with coconut give me an SPF of 40.

4:00 p.m. - out comes the homemade bugspray (containing lavender, lemongrass, and citronella EOs) to stop the pesky blackflies... happy to report that we came in unscathed!

5:15 p.m. - hubby has a small case of tendonitis flaring up in his foot.... again a good rub with PanAway helps

5:20  p.m. - Just had my hands, and sink, covered in remnants of raw beef... thank goodness for Thieves! I can rest assured that there's no germs and bacteria left on me or in the sink after a good scrubbing with our Thieves cleaner.

6:00 p.m. - time for shower for me. Tried out the new Young Living Copaiba and Vanilla shampoo and conditioner and I am in LOVE!!!!!!! It smells so nice, but not harsh or strong. There is no suds due to the purity of the product... no bad toxic yuckies  to go into my system or hurt the environment. Oh and the conditioner has left my hair softer than it's been in months... (I've been "no poo" for the last 6 months). It was like heaven. I also used the cedarwood/pepperming Young Living Bar soap... mmmmm.

6:15 p.m. - a repeat of my moisturizing routine from earlier today

6:30 p.m. - I run the bath for my filthy toddler... he's hyper, wrestling with the hubby so I add a few drops of Peace & Calming to his bath water.

6:35 p.m. - Wash the kiddo with our homemade babywash containing castile soap with some lavender in it.

6:40 p.m. - Sneak into the toddler's room and add a drop of Peace & Calming behind the ears of his "lovey" -- a Monkey affectionately called "Soup".

6:41 p.m. - Apply some Oregano Oil to my hubby's quickly disappearing mole.

6:45 p.m. - Give aforementioned kiddo his nightly rubdown with coconut oil and add a couple of drops of Peace & Calming to the bottoms of his feet.

6:47 p.m. - Brush his teeth with Young Living's KidScents toothpaste (we like to call it "Monster Mouth" haha.

7:40 p.m. - Diffuse a little Purification to take away the wet dog smell from the livingroom/kitchen.

Which brings us to now.... I'll use a few more YL products before the day is done (ie: toothpaste, Valor for preventing my hubby from snoring, etc.)

Young Living's products have definitely become a part of my daily routine. It's hard to remember life without it, and each month I try something new and different and I have yet to be disappointed. I'm excited to try some of their supplements next.... probiotics, vitamins, etc.

Today I'm going to talk about a problem that may be common to many English/Irish/Scottish/French descendants like myself.... moles. I try to put a positive spin on them and call them big freckles, or beauty marks, but honestly I see them as just ugly, annoying things that get in my way.  I've got tons of them and have learned to accept the majority of them, but there are a few that are raised/elevated that snag and end up hurting. I've always wanted to get rid of them but have been too embarrassed and too lazy to  go to the doctor to get them chopped off... plus it sounded a little painful. Well, enter Young Living's Oregano Essentail Oil.

This is a powerful oil that packs a big punch. There are tons of uses for it, and I'm sure I'll talk more about them in future posts, but it is an excellent mole remover. How do I know? Well, I have a very brave husband who was willing to be my guinea pig, and let me try Oregano EO to remove two large moles on his back -- a floppy one, and a stiff one. Two very different moles with one simple treatment. It worked! I wish I would have taken before and after pics because it's insane to see the difference. I am definitely going to start doing it on my own moles after seeing the success he had with his. Trust me, if you have some yucky moles that you want to get rid of, Oregano is the way to go!

Ok so this wonderful little boy growing inside of me has caused me a little bit of PGP (Pelvic Girdle Pain), which often stirs up an old pinched nerve injury from my University volleyball days... affects my sciatic nerve. It makes it near impossible to chase after my rambunctious toddler when it flares up. Normally, when I'm not pregnant, to treat my sore back I use PanAway blend (which contains Wintergreen oil -- which is not safe for preggo mommies). But now I've found a safe, and effective substitute = Copaiba and Clove. Hallelujah!

I also use these oils for easing the pain and discomfort of teething babies ---more on that on another post though :)

So, as most of you know, I am currently 27 weeks pregnant with my second little man. Essential oils have been a lifesaver throughout this pregnancy. Peppermint was my go-to oil in the first trimester... I suffered horrible morning/all-day sickness and diffusing peppermint in my YL Diffuser was a daily occurrence for me. I would put a drop behind my ears. And when I was out and about and I felt a wave of nausea coming along I'd take out the bottle of peppermint and sniff it directly from the bottle.

Although it's not on the picture below, I'm adding Lemon essential oil to this list. I had the craving for sour/lemon-y things so I have gotten into the habit of putting Lemon EO in my water every day. I love it.

Lavender, as I mentioned in the last post, has been what I have used to combat the itchiness on my growing pregnant belly (itchiness was worse in the early stages which coincided with the harsh dry conditions of our Canadian, January, winter weather). I just add a couple drops on my hand with a little coconut oil and slather it on my belly. Instant relief and conditioning; not to mention how nice it smells :)

Luckily I haven't needed to use Valor, Aroma Life, or into the future. But I'm excited to get my Gentle Baby (it should be here any day and the wait is killing me)!!! I have been lucky and haven't gotten any stretch marks yet, but I want to use this to prevent them. But most importantly I want to use it to prep my perineum for this next child's entry into the world. I had a traumatic 3rd degree tear when I gave birth to Luke, and sadly I still suffer from pain and discomfort "down there" nearly 2 and 1/2 years later. So, I will be using Gentle Baby and ClaraDerm Spray to, hopefully, minimize any potential damage this time.

In the months to come I am sure that I'll be adding more to this list. I love finding new, effective ways to use my EOs to make this pregnancy more comfortable for both me and baby #2.

I am a cloth diapering mommy (in the midst of potty training my 27 month old), but this has been my go-to diaper rash --- and really any rash, or dry skin, issue --- since I gave birth to my son. He had horrible contact eczema with any and all disposable diapers (don't get me started on the chemicals and health issues surrounding sposies). This was the only thing that he would tolerate being put on his bum, really the only thing that worked to soothe the soreness that he had to deal with. Once we switched to cloth we rarely had an issue with rashes, but every now and then, usually around teething time, he'd have more acidic bowel movements and would need a little dab of this at each change. So easy, and so effective!   This also made great nipple cream when I was nursing, and has been a life-saver with the itchiness that has sprung up on my belly since baby #2 started to show. Give it a try! I highly recommend it.

Today I'm sharing this for all of those seasonal allergy sufferers out there. Luckily, I am not one of those people, but my poor husband has horrible allergies. He has tried everything from Claritin, to Benadryll, and only found mild relief with Aerius.... basically, invested a lot of money and chemicals into his system when none of it really did the trick. He tried some more natural remedies, and did ok with Stinging Nettle tea and capsules last year. But this year,  he decided to give our wonderful Young Living Essential Oils a try. 2-3 times a day he takes a spoonful of local, raw honey, and puts a drop of each peppermint, lemon and lavender on the honey and eats it. Admittedly it took him about a week to get used to the taste, and to notice any relief. But last night he said, "This is actually working! I don't have an itchy throat, or red itchy eyes, and I'm not as sneezy as I normally am." Once again YLEOs have helped to heal my family. Surprise, surprise :)
